Best Dental Chews for Dogs: How to Choose and Compare

Last checked: By the DentalDogTreats editorial team Methodology

Short answer

There is no single best dental chew for every dog. Start with products on the VOHC accepted list, pick the size printed for your dog's weight, and count the chew's calories toward the daily treat allowance. Then filter by what your dog can eat. This page compares four VOHC-accepted lines on those points and ranks none of them.

How we chose what to compare

We compare published manufacturer data and the VOHC accepted list. We do not test chews on dogs, and we use no Amazon prices, ratings or reviews. The four lines below are the ones for which we have read VOHC status, weight bands and calories per size directly from the manufacturer (one calorie set comes from a retailer label statement, marked). They are listed by brand name, not ranked. Other VOHC-accepted chews, such as Pedigree Dentastix, OraVet and Purina DentaLife, are on the VOHC accepted list; they join the table when their sizes and calories are confirmed. Details are in our methodology. Data checked October 13, 2026.

How to choose a dental chew for your dog

1. Look for the VOHC claim

The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) accepts a named product for a named claim: plaque, tartar, or both. Acceptance rests on trial data the manufacturer submits, and it covers the product on the list, not the whole brand. It does not say the chew is safe for every dog. Check the exact line on the VOHC list: on October 13, 2026 it showed 38 chews (37 edible chew treats and 1 rawhide chew) among 83 dog products.1

2. Match the size to your dog's weight

Every brand sizes by body weight, and the bands differ between brands. A 45 lb dog takes the Regular size in Greenies Original but the Small/Medium in Milk-Bone Brushing Chews. Use today's weight, read the pack, and see the weight table below. Dogs under the minimum age or weight on a label should skip that chew.

3. Count the calories against the daily treat budget

The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) advises that treats should make up less than 10% of a dog's daily calories.2 A dental chew is a treat, so its calories count, along with training treats. One large chew in the table below carries 100 to 173 kcal, which can use up a whole day's allowance for a small or medium dog. Your veterinarian can give your dog's daily calorie need. To turn a pack price you type yourself into a cost per day, use the dental chew cost calculator.

4. Check ingredients against your dog's diet

If your dog avoids chicken, wheat or grain, read the ingredient list, not the front of the pack. The filters below use only what a manufacturer or a named retailer listing states. For stomach upset and suspected allergies, read Dental chews for sensitive stomachs and allergies and ask your vet.

"No chicken" shows only lines where the manufacturer page states there is none; Greenies Original is hidden by that filter because the manufacturer page we checked does not say. A "natural claim" filter is left out: no natural-claim wording has been recorded from the labels, and the word has no standard definition for treats. We will add it only if we collect it.

Which size and how many calories at a given dog weight?

Matching each line's printed weight band to a sample dog weight shows how much the same dog's daily chew differs. The values come from the table above; "not published" means the pages we checked give no number for that size.

For a dog at the edge of a band, follow the pack label. Dogs of the same weight can differ widely in daily calorie need, so treat this as a size guide and not a feeding plan.

Where to buy dental chews

The buttons in the table open an Amazon search for the product name. They are affiliate links, and we earn a commission if you buy through them, at no cost to you. We show no prices, ratings or stock, because they change and vary by pack size and by seller. Compare the same pack size and chew count before you decide, and put your own price into the cost calculator to get a cost per day. How the links work is explained in the affiliate disclosure.

Frequently asked questions

What is the healthiest dental chew for dogs?

No dental chew is healthiest for every dog. Start with a product on the VOHC list, then check that the size fits your dog's weight, the calories fit the daily treat allowance and the ingredients suit your dog. The comparison table above sets out those points for four lines. Your veterinarian can say which fits your dog.

What's the best dental chew for a dog?

It depends on the dog's weight, diet and chewing habits, so this page names no winner. Compare VOHC status, size bands, calories per chew and ingredient flags in the table, and filter for what your dog needs. The VOHC accepted list shows every chew with a claim, and your vet can help narrow the choice.

Do vets recommend dental chews for dogs?

This site quotes no veterinarians, so it cannot say what vets in general recommend. VOHC acceptance is a checkable signal, and the VOHC page explains what it does and does not mean. Ask your own veterinarian whether a chew suits your dog's teeth and health.

Are there any dog dental chews that actually work?

VOHC accepts a product only after reviewing manufacturer trial data on plaque or tartar reduction, and it lists accepted chews by name. That is the closest independent check we can point to. Chews do not treat existing dental disease, so see your vet for red gums, loose teeth or bad breath that persists.

How do I choose the right dental chew for my dog?

Check that the exact line is on the VOHC list, pick the size for your dog's current weight, add the chew's calories to the day's treats (under 10% of daily calories, per WSAVA), and read the ingredient list for anything your dog avoids. Introduce a new chew slowly and watch your dog while it chews.
