Short answer
For large dogs, start with VOHC-listed chews that publish a size for your dog's weight, then check each chew's calories against WSAVA's 10% treat limit. Greenies Original Large (50 to 100 lb, 142 kcal), Milk-Bone Large and VeggieDent Large cover big dogs; the tables below show weights and calories.
How we chose and sized these chews
We compare published manufacturer data and the VOHC accepted list; we do not test products on dogs (see our methodology). A line is included when we hold a weight band for a size that fits a dog of 40 lb or more. Calories come from a manufacturer page where one prints them and otherwise from a retailer label, and the table says which. A cell that reads "not published" means exactly that on the pages we checked on October 13, 2026.
The bands start at different weights. Greenies Original Large covers 50 to 100 lb and its Regular size stops at 50 lb. Whimzees Brushzees splits big dogs into Large (40 to 60 lb) and X-Large (60 lb and up). VeggieDent FR3SH uses Medium for 22 to 66 lb and Large above 66 lb. Milk-Bone Brushing Chews Large begins at 50 lb, Dentastix Original Large and DentaLife Large at 40 lb, and Earthbones Large at 50 lb. A 65 lb dog is therefore "Large" for Greenies and Milk-Bone, "X-Large" for Whimzees and "Medium" for VeggieDent.
Dental chews for large dogs: sizes, calories and share of the treat budget
Method. WSAVA says treats should stay under 10% of a dog's daily calories and gives the daily treat allowance by body weight for an average healthy adult dog at ideal weight.1 The table uses two points from that chart: 25 kg (55 lb), 94 kcal a day, and 35 kg (77 lb), 121 kcal a day. The share is the kcal in one chew divided by the allowance, for one chew a day and nothing else counted. Your own dog may need more or less, and a vet can give the real figure.

VOHC claim and seal year come from the accepted list copied October 13, 2026. Dentastix: the row names only the Original Large Dog Treats, Beef & Fresh Variety Pack; Original is 78 kcal, Beef 84 and Fresh 73 on the manufacturer pages. DentaLife: the row reads "North American sizes". Earthbones is not on the list. "Retailer label" means a label statement on a retailer page, cited as text and not linked; "seller page" means the maker's own seller page, not linked.
The spread is wide. One Large chew runs from 78 kcal (Dentastix Original) to 243 kcal (Earthbones), and the same chew takes a very different bite out of the allowance depending on the dog: Greenies Large is 151% of a 55 lb dog's 94 kcal and 117% of a 77 lb dog's 121 kcal. A figure above 100% means that one chew alone passes the 10% line, which is a reason to cut the main meal by the same calories, as the Greenies label itself advises, or to ask your vet about a different line. Use the dental chew calorie calculator for your dog's weight.
Best dental chews for Labradors
The American Kennel Club standard for the Labrador Retriever gives the approximate weight of dogs and bitches in working condition as 65 to 80 pounds for dogs and 55 to 70 pounds for bitches.2 That is the show-ring ideal; pet Labradors vary, so weigh your own dog. Across that range a Labrador is a large dog on every chart we have, and the practical question is which side of a size cutoff your dog sits on.
| Line | 55 lb (female, low end) | 65 lb (male low end, female near 70) | 70 lb (female top end) | 80 lb (male top end) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Greenies Original | Large (50 to 100 lb) | Large (50 to 100 lb) | Large (50 to 100 lb) | Large (50 to 100 lb) |
| Whimzees Brushzees | Large (40 to 60 lb) | X-Large (60 lb and up) | X-Large (60 lb and up) | X-Large (60 lb and up) |
| C.E.T. VeggieDent FR3SH | Medium (22 to 66 lb) | Medium (22 to 66 lb) | Large (over 66 lb) | Large (over 66 lb) |
| Milk-Bone Brushing Chews | Large (50 lb and up) | Large (50 lb and up) | Large (50 lb and up) | Large (50 lb and up) |
| Pedigree Dentastix Original | Large (40 lb and up) | Large (40 lb and up) | Large (40 lb and up) | Large (40 lb and up) |
Two cutoffs split the range. At VeggieDent the Medium size ends at 66 lb, so a 65 lb dog uses Medium (75 kcal) and a 70 lb dog uses Large (105 kcal). At Whimzees the change comes at 60 lb: a 55 lb female uses Large and nearly every male uses X-Large, whose calories are not published on the manufacturer page we checked. Greenies Large, Milk-Bone Large and Dentastix Large cover the whole AKC range with one size each.
On calories, a Labrador at the AKC midpoints (about 66 lb, 30 kg; about 77 lb, 35 kg) has a 108 or 121 kcal daily allowance in WSAVA's chart. One Greenies Large (142 kcal) is 131% of the first and 117% of the second; one Milk-Bone Large (100 kcal) is 93% and 83%; one VeggieDent chew is 69% at 66 lb (Medium, 75 kcal) and 87% at 77 lb (Large, 105 kcal). None of this says a chew is unsuitable. It says the chew should be counted as most of the day's treats. For dogs that gulp, see the safety section below, and for chewing every day see how often to give a dental chew.
Best dental chews for German Shepherds
The AKC German Shepherd Dog standard gives height, not weight: the desired height at the top of the shoulder blade is 24 to 26 inches for males and 22 to 24 inches for bitches.3 Because no weight is published there, we do not assign a chew size to the breed, and we found no breed-specific chew data in the sources we checked. Weigh your own dog and use the weight bands in the first table.
For a large shepherd, the useful comparisons are the cutoffs. A dog of 60 to 66 lb is Large at Greenies and Milk-Bone, but X-Large at Whimzees and still Medium at VeggieDent. A dog above 66 lb moves to VeggieDent Large; above 100 lb it leaves the Greenies Large band, which ends at 100 lb, while Milk-Bone Large, Dentastix Large, DentaLife Large, Earthbones Large and Whimzees X-Large are open-ended. If your shepherd sits near a boundary, go by your dog's weight today, not a breed average, and ask your vet which size suits it.
Best dental chews for extra-large and giant dogs
For dogs of 90 lb and over the choice narrows and the arithmetic gets harder. The table shows a 99 lb dog (45 kg), the heaviest point in WSAVA's allowance chart, where treats should stay at or under 146 kcal a day.1 The chart stops there, so we give no allowance for a 120 or 150 lb dog and no sourced figure for giant breeds.
| Line | VOHC claim, seal year | Size for 99 lb (45 kg; budget 146 kcal) | Where to look |
|---|---|---|---|
| Greenies Original | Plaque, Tartar, 2007 | Large (50 to 100 lb): 142 kcal, 97% | Greenies Original on Amazon (search: Greenies Original dental treats) |

| C.E.T. VeggieDent FR3SH | Plaque, Tartar, 2020 | Large (over 66 lb): 105 kcal, 72% | VeggieDent FR3SH on Amazon (search: Virbac CET VeggieDent FR3SH dental chews for dogs) |
| Milk-Bone Brushing Chews | Tartar, 2014 | Large (50 lb and up): 100 kcal, 68% | Milk-Bone Brushing on Amazon (search: Milk-Bone Brushing Chews daily dental dog treats) |
| Pedigree Dentastix Original | Tartar, 2024 (the row names only the Large Beef & Fresh Variety Pack) | Large (40 lb and up): 78 kcal, 53% | Dentastix Original on Amazon (search: Pedigree Dentastix Original dental treats for dogs) |
| Purina DentaLife Daily Oral Care | Tartar, 2016 (row: North American sizes) | Large (40 lb and up): 100 kcal, retailer label, 68% | DentaLife on Amazon (search: Purina DentaLife Daily Oral Care dog treats) |
| Earthbones Dental Chews | not on the VOHC list (checked October 13, 2026) | Large (50 lb and up): 243 kcal, seller page, 166% | Earthbones on Amazon (search: Earthbones dental chews for dogs) |

Greenies Large (142 kcal) is 97% of the 99 lb allowance and sits at the top of its 50 to 100 lb band, so a dog heavier than that has no Greenies Original size in our data. VeggieDent Large (over 66 lb, 105 kcal) is 72%, Milk-Bone Large (50 lb and up, 100 kcal) is 68%, and Earthbones Large (50 lb and up, 243 kcal) is 166%. Whimzees X-Large (60 lb and up) is the one size whose calories we cannot state: they are not published on the manufacturer page we checked. For the giant end, check the package of the open-ended sizes (60, 66 or 50 lb "and up") and ask your vet whether the chew suits your dog's size and appetite.
Safety notes for big dogs
Large dogs are not exempt from choking and blockage, and they bring their own risks. WSAVA advises supervising chews and avoiding "excessively hard chews and treats, for example, antlers and hooves" as well as those with sharp edges.1 The ASPCA notes that very aggressive chewers can swallow big pieces of a chew, which can cause an intestinal blockage needing surgery, and says to consult a veterinarian immediately if a dog swallows a chunk.4 If your dog bolts a chew in a few bites, tell your vet and ask whether a different size or type would suit it.
Practical points that follow from the data: give the size matched to your dog's current weight rather than a bigger one for longer chewing; keep to the one-a-day limit on the label (Greenies, Milk-Bone, Whimzees and VeggieDent each state one a day); and treat a daily big chew as a large part of the treat allowance. Our guide to dental chew safety lists the documented risks with sources.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best dental chews for large breed dogs?
No source names one best chew. For a dog over 50 lb, compare VOHC-listed lines with a Large or X-Large size: Greenies Original Large (142 kcal), Milk-Bone Large (100), VeggieDent Large (105) and Dentastix Original Large (78). Pick by your dog's weight and calorie budget, and ask your vet.
What size dental chew does a Labrador need?
The AKC standard puts Labrador dogs at 65 to 80 lb and bitches at 55 to 70 lb. That is Large at Greenies, Milk-Bone and Dentastix; VeggieDent switches from Medium to Large at 66 lb and Whimzees from Large to X-Large at 60 lb. Weigh your dog and follow the label.
Is one dental chew a day too many for a big dog?
It can be. WSAVA caps treats at 10% of daily calories, 94 kcal at 25 kg (55 lb) and 146 kcal at 45 kg (99 lb). One Greenies Large is 142 kcal. Cut the main meal by the chew's calories, as Greenies advises, or ask your vet about a lower-calorie line.
Do dental chews for large dogs come in a size above 100 lb?
Not in every line. Greenies Original Large stops at 100 lb. Whimzees X-Large (60 lb and up), VeggieDent Large (over 66 lb), Milk-Bone Large (50 lb and up), Dentastix Large (40 lb and up) and Earthbones Large (50 lb and up) are open-ended.
