Dental Chew Calorie Calculator for Dogs

Last checked: By the DentalDogTreats editorial team Methodology

Short answer

Each maker we checked says one dental chew a day. WSAVA says all treats together should stay under 10% of daily calories. For a 40 lb neutered adult dog that budget is roughly 98 kcal, so one Regular Greenies chew (88 kcal) uses most of it. Type your dog's weight below for the numbers that fit.

Calculate your dog's treat budget

Enter your dog's weight to see the estimate.

RER = 70 x (weight in kg)^0.75 | daily need (estimate) = RER x 1.6 neutered or 1.8 intact | treat budget = 10% of daily need

These are estimates for a healthy adult dog at ideal weight. Puppies, seniors, pregnant, very active or overweight dogs and dogs with health conditions need a different number from a veterinarian. The calculator runs in your browser and stores nothing.

How the numbers are worked out

Resting energy requirement (RER) is the calories a healthy dog uses at rest. The Merck Veterinary Manual gives the formula as 70 x body weight in kg to the power 0.75 and lists maintenance energy for healthy adult dogs as 1.6 x RER if neutered and 1.8 x RER if intact.2 WSAVA says treats, including chews, should make up less than 10% of a dog's daily calorie intake and advises asking the manufacturer when a calorie count is not on the label.1 The treat budget on this page is 10% of the estimated daily need. We do not know your dog, so the result is a starting point for a conversation with your vet, not a prescription. If you pick "not sure", the calculator uses RER alone, which gives a smaller, more cautious budget.

Chew sizes and calories come from our product database, read from the manufacturer pages cited below (checked on October 13, 2026). We compare published data only. We do not test chews on dogs, and we show no Amazon prices or ratings.

Treat budget and chew calories by dog weight

Static examples for a neutered adult dog (1.6 x RER), so the table works without JavaScript. Each chew cell shows the size the maker lists for that weight, its kcal and the share of the treat budget that one chew uses.

At a boundary weight (for example exactly 25 lb) the makers' ranges touch or overlap; check the package. Greenies is not for dogs under 5 lb. Whimzees does not publish kcal for X-Small or X-Large on the pages we checked. Kcal for Whimzees S, M and L come from a retailer listing (see Sources), not from the manufacturer page. For small dogs one chew often uses most of the treat budget.

How many dental chews per day?

The feeding guideline recorded from each maker's page is one chew a day. We do not set a different number. The table shows the recorded wording and a link to look for each line on Amazon.

Missing values are written "not published" because the pages we checked (October 13, 2026) do not give them. Nothing is filled in from another size or product.

These four lines are the ones whose size and calorie data we have read. Frequently asked questions

How many dental chews can a dog have a day?

The makers of the four lines on this page say one chew a day (Milk-Bone also says to cut food by about 10%). WSAVA adds that all treats together should stay under 10% of daily calories, and for many dogs one chew is already most of that budget.

Is 2 Greenies a day too much?

Greenies says 1 per day. Using the Merck formula, a 40 lb neutered adult needs about 985 kcal a day, so a 10% treat budget is about 98 kcal. One Regular Greenie is 88 kcal and two are 176 kcal, nearly double the budget before any other treat. Ask your veterinarian.

Are Greenies high in calories?

They use a large share of a dog's treat budget. Greenies lists 25 kcal (Teenie), 52 (Petite), 88 (Regular) and 142 kcal (Large). For a 40 lb neutered adult, a Regular chew is about 90% of a 98 kcal treat budget. The label tells owners to reduce the main meal by the same calories.

How many calories does a dog need a day?

It depends on weight, neuter status, age and activity. A common estimate is resting energy 70 x kg^0.75, times 1.6 for a neutered adult or 1.8 for an intact adult (Merck Veterinary Manual). It is an estimate, and your veterinarian can give an exact figure.
