VOHC Accepted Dental Chews for Dogs: The Full List

Looking for products that are not chews? The 26 water additives, gels, sprays, toothpastes and powders and the 4 brushes and wipes are covered on VOHC-listed dental care products for dogs.

What is VOHC and what does acceptance mean?

The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) recognizes pet products that meet its preset standards for slowing the buildup of plaque and tartar (dental calculus). Manufacturers submit trial data collected under VOHC protocols, and VOHC reviews that data. According to vohc.org, the council reviews the submissions and does not test products itself. Products that qualify may carry the VOHC Seal of Acceptance and are added to the accepted-products list.

In short, acceptance means the product met VOHC's protocol for plaque and/or tartar reduction. It does not mean the product is safe for every dog, right for the size of your dog, or better than a product that has not been submitted. The Seal covers the specific product named on the list, not the whole brand.

Plaque claim vs tartar claim

Plaque is the soft film of bacteria that forms on teeth. Tartar (calculus) is plaque that has hardened with minerals. VOHC lists each product with the claim it was accepted for: plaque, tartar, or both. A product accepted for tartar only has not been accepted for plaque, and the reverse. In the table, the "Claim" column shows this.

Source: VOHC accepted products, copied on October 13, 2026. VOHC updates its list, so confirm the current entry on vohc.org before you buy. Product names are shown as VOHC lists them. "Seal year" is the year of acceptance shown on the list.

"Veterinary Only" products are sold through veterinary clinics, so no store link is shown. Links appear only for chews listed as consumer-available. One name is shortened (the credit to a named individual in the pet::ESSENTIAL entry is left out). One entry (ProDen PlaqueOff Soft Chews, first listing) shows no seal year on VOHC's page.

Popular brands: which lines are accepted?

Owners often ask about a brand rather than a product. VOHC accepts specific lines, so a brand name alone does not tell you much. Entries below come from the same list and the same date.

Brands not on VOHC's list

Earthbones, Nylabone and Minties do not appear on VOHC's accepted-products list for dogs on October 13, 2026. That says nothing about whether the products are good or bad; it only means the Seal does not cover them. Manufacturers choose whether to submit data to VOHC, and a brand can be added later. To compare a specific product, use the filters above or search vohc.org.

What does "vet recommended" mean compared with the VOHC Seal?

"Vet recommended" on a package can mean very different things: a survey of veterinarians, a single endorsement, a paid partnership, or a vet-formulated recipe. The phrase has no standard definition that we know of, and the package seldom explains what it rests on.

The VOHC Seal is narrower and easier to check. It is tied to a named product, a specific claim (plaque, tartar or both) and a public list. It says nothing about taste, calories, ingredient preferences, choking risk for a given dog, or allergies. Your own veterinarian can weigh those against your dog's mouth, age and health.
