Best Dental Chews for Golden Retrievers: Size, VOHC Status and Calories

Last checked: By the DentalDogTreats editorial team Methodology

Short answer

Most adult Golden Retrievers need a large-size dental chew. The AKC breed standard puts males at 65 to 75 pounds and females at 55 to 65 pounds. Among VOHC-listed lines, Greenies Original Large (for dogs 50 to 100 lb, 142 kcal) covers that range. Check each brand's size chart, and ask your vet.

What size dental chew does a Golden Retriever need?

The American Kennel Club's official breed standard gives the weight of male Golden Retrievers as 65 to 75 pounds and of females as 55 to 65 pounds. Individual dogs vary and the standard describes the show ring, so weigh your own dog before you buy. On that range, most adult Goldens fall into the large band that chew makers use. Greenies Original, for example, lists its Large size for dogs 50 to 100 lb, and its Regular size ends at 50 lb (manufacturer page, checked October 13, 2026).

Two details matter. First, size bands are not the same across brands. Whimzees Brushzees puts Large at 40 to 60 lb and X-Large at 60 lb and up, so a 70 lb male is in the top tier there but only in the standard large tier at Greenies. Second, even a female at the low end of the standard (55 lb) is above Greenies' 50 lb cutoff, so the Regular size is a step too small for her. Follow the label for your dog's current weight, not the breed average. If you also want other big breeds, see our large dog dental chews guide.

Which VOHC-listed chews come in a size for a 55 to 75 lb dog?

The table lists lines from our dataset that appear on VOHC's accepted list and sell a size for this weight range. It is not a ranking. Where a number was not published on the manufacturer page we checked, the cell says so instead of guessing.

Three cautions about reading the table. A VOHC row covers the product named on the list, not the whole brand: only two Whimzees lines are listed, and for Dentastix only one large variety pack is. Several rows are accepted for tartar only, not plaque, and the claim column shows which. And weights and calories from retailer listings can change when a maker updates a recipe, so confirm on the package. For the full list, see the VOHC accepted dental chews page.

How many calories does a large chew add for a Golden?

In the lines above a single large chew runs from 73 to 173 kcal. VCA Animal Hospitals advises keeping treats to about 10% of a dog's daily calories and asking your veterinary team for the dog's daily calorie requirement. Dental chews count toward that 10%, along with training treats.

We do not print a daily calorie figure for Golden Retrievers, because we found no sourced number that fits every dog. Use the calorie column to compare lines, then ask your vet what 10% looks like for your dog.

Chewing style and texture: what to check before you buy

We found no published source on how Golden Retrievers chew as a breed, so this page makes no breed claims on that. What helps is watching your own dog. A dog that gulps or tries to swallow large pieces needs closer supervision, and your vet can say which format suits it.

Texture is rarely published. In our data only Greenies has a texture on record, described by retailers as chewy and dense, and the other manufacturer pages we checked do not say. Greenies' own label gives one chew per day and says not for puppies under 6 months or dogs under 5 lb. Greenies also sells a separate puppy line with its own VOHC row (Plaque, Tartar, 2019). Supervise chewing, whatever the brand.

Does VOHC acceptance matter for a Golden Retriever?

VOHC accepts a specific product for a plaque claim, a tartar claim or both after reviewing the manufacturer's trial data. It is not an endorsement from vets for a brand, and it does not say a chew is right for your dog's size or stomach. It is the one independent filter that applies equally to every brand, which is why the table above uses it. If you want a plaque claim, look for "Plaque, Tartar" in the second column. Milk-Bone, Blue Buffalo, Dentastix and OraVet are accepted for tartar.

If your dog ignores chews, read why a dog won't eat or chew dental chews. If chicken, wheat or a sensitive stomach is the concern, see dental chews for sensitive stomachs and allergies, which lists ingredients from the manufacturer and retailer pages we checked.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best dental chews for large breed dogs?

There is no single best chew. For large dogs, start with products on the VOHC list that sell a size for your dog's weight, then compare calories and ingredients. The table on this page does that for 55 to 75 lb dogs, such as Greenies Original Large (50 to 100 lb, 142 kcal). Your vet can help you choose for your dog.

Can a Golden Retriever have a dental chew every day?

Greenies Original lists one chew per day on its manufacturer page, with a size matched to the dog's weight and not for dogs under 6 months or 5 lb. Other brands set their own limits, so read each label. Count the chew toward the 10% treat limit VCA describes, and ask your vet if your dog has a health condition.

Are VOHC approved chews the ones vets recommend for Golden Retrievers?

Not exactly. VOHC accepts specific products after reviewing manufacturer trial data, and it is not a list of vet picks. Some vets favor VOHC products, but we did not survey vets and cannot say what yours would choose. See our VOHC accepted list for what the Seal covers, then ask your own veterinarian.
