Purina DentaLife Daily Oral Care: Sizes, Calories and VOHC Claim

Last checked: By the DentalDogTreats editorial team Methodology

Short answer

Purina DentaLife Daily Oral Care holds a VOHC tartar claim, seal year 2016, for its North American sizes. The Small/Medium chew (dogs 20 to 40 lb) is 63 kcal and the Large (40 lb and over) is 100 kcal. It contains chicken by-product meal and wheat flour, so it does not suit dogs avoiding either.

What this page rests on

Sizes, calories and ingredients are retailer label statements, shown as plain text and marked “not linked”, because the purina.com pages returned an access error on every attempt on October 13, 2026. The seal comes from the VOHC accepted products list. We do not test chews on dogs and use no Amazon content. Where a value was not on the pages read, the page says so.

A Mini size exists, but we did not collect its figures, so it is not in the table. The Small/Medium band is 20–40 lb on the retailer page we checked; a second page gave no range, and a different weight claim seen only in a search-engine summary was dropped. A 20 lb dog and a 40 lb dog get the same 63 kcal chew.

Calories and ingredients

The retailer label lists rice, glycerin, wheat flour, sodium tripolyphosphate and malted barley flour first, with chicken by-product meal as the main protein source. The pages we checked do not state a texture or what the chew does mechanically, so we make no claim about either beyond the VOHC row. At 3,110 kcal per kg, a Large chew works out to 100 kcal.

WSAVA recommends keeping treats under 10% of daily calories (WSAVA, Feeding treats to your dog). Dividing each size by the budget at an example weight gives the share below. A Small/Medium chew is about the whole budget for a 33 lb dog, and a Large chew is above the budget for a 44 lb dog. Ask your veterinarian for your own dog's number.

One Purina DentaLife chew as a share of the WSAVA daily treat budget (WSAVA, June 2024).

VOHC status: tartar for the North American sizes

This product has a single tartar claim, seal year 2016. Chews with both claims, such as Greenies Original, carry a broader one. The council lists other Purina rows as separate products: DentaLife Plus Digestive Support and Plus Immune Support (plaque and tartar, 2023), a European-sizes row (tartar, 2017) and an ActivFresh European row (tartar, 2021). The Daily Oral Care row does not extend to those. Check the pack against the VOHC accepted list.

Who should skip DentaLife Daily Oral Care

Frequently asked questions

Is Purina DentaLife VOHC accepted?

Yes, for tartar only. The Daily Oral Care row for North American sizes has seal year 2016 on the VOHC list we checked on October 13, 2026. The Plus Digestive and Immune Support versions are separate rows.

Are Purina DentaLife chews safe for dogs?

We rate no product from a label and have not tested it. Published facts: the retailer label lists chicken by-product meal and wheat flour, and the pages we checked give no minimum age. For a dog with allergies or a health condition, ask your veterinarian.

How many calories are in a DentaLife chew?

The retailer label gives 63 kcal for Small/Medium (dogs 20 to 40 lb) and 100 kcal for Large (40 lb and over). A Mini size exists, but we did not collect its figures.

How many DentaLife chews can a dog have a day?

The retailer description says one chew a day. At 63 to 100 kcal each, even one chew can exceed the WSAVA treat budget for some dogs, so ask your veterinarian before adding it to a diet.
