Short answer
Pedigree Dentastix Original comes in three sizes, from 22 kcal (Toy/Small) to 78 kcal (Large, for dogs 40 lb and over), and its first ingredients are rice flour, wheat starch, glycerin and chicken. The VOHC lists only the Large Beef & Fresh Variety Pack of the Original line, for tartar, so check the pack.
- Fits: adult dogs from 7 lb up that eat chicken, rice and wheat, whose owners want a lower-calorie daily chew than Greenies.
- Skip or check first: puppies, dogs avoiding chicken or wheat, and owners who expect the Original to carry the VOHC seal in every pack.
- Caveat: the seal sits on one named variety pack, not on the Original line as a whole.
What this page rests on
The Large figures come from the pedigree.com Original Large page, with the Beef and Fresh calories from the two sibling pages. The Toy/Small and Small/Medium sizes are not on pedigree.com, so those numbers are retailer label statements, shown as plain text and marked “not linked”. The seal comes from the VOHC accepted products list. Everything was read on October 13, 2026; we do not test chews on dogs and use no Amazon content.

Sizes by dog weight
| Size | Dog weight | kcal per chew | Chew weight | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toy/Small | 7–22 lb | 22 | Not published on the manufacturer page we checked (2026-10-13) | Retailer label (not linked) |
| Small/Medium | 22–40 lb | 54 | Not published on the manufacturer page we checked (2026-10-13) | Retailer label (not linked) |
| Large | 40 lb and over | 78 (Beef 84, Fresh 73) | Not published on the manufacturer page we checked (2026-10-13) | Manufacturer (pedigree.com) |
One retailer page states the Small/Medium band as 22–40 lb in its features and 20–40 lb in its description, so for a dog near 22 lb follow the weight chart on the pack. Pedigree.com lists only Large sizes for the US, which is why the two smaller sizes rest on retailer labels. A Large chew is 78 kcal, but Beef is 84 and Fresh 73, so the flavor changes the count.
Calories and ingredients
The Original Large list begins rice flour, wheat starch, glycerin, chicken and gelatin. That is a starch-and-glycerin base with chicken fourth, so the chew suits dogs that tolerate poultry and wheat and is a poor fit for a dog on a chicken-free or grain-free diet. The Fresh variant has its own list, so a dog avoiding chicken should read the Fresh pack rather than assume it matches the Original.
WSAVA recommends keeping treats under 10% of daily calories (WSAVA, Feeding treats to your dog). Dividing each size by the budget at an example weight gives the share below: a Large chew is close to the whole budget for a 44 lb dog, while a Toy/Small chew stays under it for every weight shown. Ask your veterinarian for your own dog's figure.
| Size | kcal per chew | Chew as % of a daily treat budget, by dog weight |
|---|---|---|
| Toy/Small | 22 | 9 lb: 24 kcal budget, chew = 92%; 13 lb: 32 kcal budget, chew = 69%; 18 lb: 40 kcal budget, chew = 55%; 22 lb: 47 kcal budget, chew = 47% |
| Small/Medium | 54 | 22 lb: 47 kcal budget, chew = 115%; 33 lb: 64 kcal budget, chew = 84% |
| Large | 78 | 44 lb: 79 kcal budget, chew = 99%; 55 lb: 94 kcal budget, chew = 83%; 77 lb: 121 kcal budget, chew = 64%; 99 lb: 146 kcal budget, chew = 53% |
VOHC status: which packs carry the seal
The council names products, not brands. For Pedigree it lists three US-named entries as of the check on October 13, 2026: Dentastix Original Large Dog Treats, Beef & Fresh Variety Pack (tartar, 2024), Dentastix Advanced (plaque and tartar, 2018) and Dentastix Light (plaque and tartar, 2024). Three more Dentastix-named entries belong to Pedigree UK, and we did not match them to US packs. Among the Original products only the Large Beef & Fresh Variety Pack is listed, for tartar; the Toy/Small and Small/Medium packs, and the plain Original Large pack, are not themselves listed. Pedigree.com's US page we checked shows no Advanced product. Verify the exact pack name on the VOHC accepted list.
Who should skip Dentastix Original
- Puppies, and dogs under about 7 lb (the smallest size starts at 7 lb).
- Dogs avoiding chicken, wheat or grains.
- Owners who require a plaque claim: the Original entry on the council list is tartar only.
- Dogs for which the calories matter, such as those on a weight plan, until a veterinarian has set the daily budget.
Frequently asked questions
Do vets recommend Dentastix?
This page quotes no veterinarians. The checkable fact is the VOHC list: on October 13, 2026 it accepts one Original Large variety pack for tartar, plus Dentastix Advanced and Light. Whether it suits your dog is a question for your own veterinarian.
Are Dentastix good or bad for dogs?
We cannot rate that from a label and run no tests. Published facts: Original Large starts with rice flour, wheat starch, glycerin, chicken and gelatin, and one Large chew is 78 kcal. It is a treat, so count the calories. For a dog with allergies or a health condition, ask your veterinarian.
Is Pedigree Dentastix Original VOHC accepted?
Only in part. The council lists the Original Large Beef & Fresh Variety Pack for tartar (seal year 2024), checked on October 13, 2026. It does not list the Toy/Small or Small/Medium Original packs, or the plain Original Large pack, as such.
How many calories are in a Dentastix?
The Original is 22 kcal for Toy/Small, 54 for Small/Medium and 78 for Large. In the Large Beef & Fresh variety pack, Beef is 84 and Fresh 73. The two smaller sizes come from retailer labels rather than pedigree.com.
How many Dentastix can a dog have a day?
The Large page says one treat a day for adult dogs 40 lb and over. Follow the pack for the smaller sizes, and do not give more because the chew is small: each one adds calories.
