Short answer
Most dental chews are labeled for one chew a day, and VOHC's trials feed the product as directed on the package. Count the chew toward the limit of about 10% of daily calories: in our calculation for four VOHC-listed lines, one chew of the label size went over WSAVA’s allowance in 11 of 15 cases.2, 4 Ask your veterinarian if your dog has a medical condition.
This page sets label directions from four VOHC-listed lines beside VOHC’s rules and WSAVA’s treat guidance. It tests nothing on dogs and uses no Amazon prices or ratings. Data checked on October 13, 2026.
Is it okay to give my dog a dental chew every day?
Yes, for a healthy adult dog, if the chew is sized for the dog and fits its calorie budget. Daily use is how these products are labeled and how they were studied. VOHC says daily use of products with its Seal helps keep a pet’s teeth clean,1 and its trial rules say the product is used as recommended on the package for at least 28 days.2 The two published trials cited here feed one chew a day: for 28 days in a 60-dog study, and for 6 weeks in a comparison with brushing.6, 7 Cornell notes that plaque can begin hardening into tartar in as short as 24 hours.5
The studies we found tested daily feeding, so they do not show how much benefit a two- or three-times-a-week schedule keeps. If daily calories are the problem, ask your vet whether a lower-calorie chew or a different routine fits better.
| Line | VOHC claim, seal year3 | Feeding guideline on the label | Minimum age on the label |
|---|---|---|---|
| Greenies Original | Plaque, Tartar, 2007 | 1 per day; the label tells owners to cut the main meal by the chew’s calories9, 10 | 6 months, and not for dogs under 5 lb9 |
| Milk-Bone Brushing Chews | Tartar, 2014 | 1 per day; reduce food by about 10% a day while feeding11 | 6 months11 |
| Whimzees Brushzees | Plaque, Tartar, 2019 | 1 chew per day, fresh water always available13 | 9 months13 |
| C.E.T. VeggieDent FR3SH | Plaque, Tartar, 2020 | Once daily12 | No age in months published; Virbac’s FAQ says puppies once they eat solid food with ease, with supervision12 |
How many dental chews can a dog have a day?
One, according to all four labels above. A second chew goes past the label and doubles the calories that chew supplies. WSAVA advises that treats, chews included, stay under 10% of a dog’s daily calories, and its table gives the daily treat calories for an average healthy adult dog at ideal weight: 24 kcal at 4 kg (9 lb), 47 at 10 kg (22 lb), 79 at 20 kg (44 lb) and 146 at 45 kg (99 lb).4 A real dog’s needs can differ, so your vet can give an exact figure.
How many calories does one dental chew use?
The table puts the label-size chew for four dog weights against WSAVA’s allowance for that weight. The match of weight to size follows each manufacturer’s own weight bands.
| Dog weight | WSAVA allowance | Greenies Original | Milk-Bone Brushing | VeggieDent FR3SH | Brushzees |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 kg (about 18 lb) | 40 | Petite: 52 (over) | Mini: 30 | Small: 48 (over) | Small: 44 (over) |
| 15 kg (about 33 lb) | 64 | Regular: 88 (over) | Small/Medium: 65 (over) | Medium: 75 (over) | Medium: 87 (over) |
| 25 kg (about 55 lb) | 94 | Large: 142 (over) | Large: 100 (over) | Medium: 75 | Large: 173 (over) |
| 35 kg (about 77 lb) | 121 | Large: 142 (over) | Large: 100 | Large: 105 | X-Large: not published on the manufacturer page we checked (2026-10-13) |

How we got these cells (our calculation, not a figure WSAVA or the makers publish): for each dog weight we took the allowance from WSAVA’s table, took the size whose manufacturer weight band covers that weight, and marked “over” where that size’s kcal per chew is higher than the allowance. In 11 of the 15 cells with a calorie figure, one chew alone is above the allowance. That does not make the chew unsafe. It means the chew should replace other treats and part of a meal, which is what the Greenies and Milk-Bone labels say.9, 11 Our Dentastix vs Greenies and Greenies vs Whimzees pages put sizes and calories for those pairs side by side.
What if my dog gets more than one chew a day?
A second daily chew is beyond all four labels and, for most dogs in the table, beyond the allowance. WSAVA lists obesity among the harms of the wrong treat,4 and VCA says too many treats unbalance the diet and can dull the appetite for regular food.8 Chews that are gulped carry mechanical risks too; the dental chew safety guide covers choking, blockage and warning signs. Table scraps and training treats count toward the same 10%.
Morning or night: when should I give a dental chew?
We found no veterinary source that names a best time of day, so we do not give one. The timing rule VOHC does give is to offer treats when the owner can watch the dog chew,1 which in practice points to a time when someone is home to watch.
Which dogs need a different plan?
- Puppies and very small dogs. Labels set floors: 6 months for Greenies Original (and not under 5 lb) and for Milk-Bone, 9 months for Brushzees.9, 11, 13 Ask your vet what suits a younger puppy.
- Overweight dogs. The chew has to fit inside the 10%. WSAVA suggests asking your veterinary team about a suitable quantity and type of treat.4
- Dogs with a medical condition or a prescription diet. WSAVA says conventional treats may not be appropriate;4 VCA gives examples such as a low-fat diet for pancreatitis, and prescription urinary foods that may not work properly with extra treats.8 See the special diets section of our sensitive stomach and allergies guide.
A chew is one part of the routine
Cornell calls brushing the most effective home method and lists dental diets, chews and treats, and water additives, gels and sprays as options beside it or when brushing is not possible.5 If your dog will not accept a brush, read how to clean a dog’s teeth without brushing; for what studies say about chews, see do dental chews work. To see which chews hold the VOHC Seal, use the VOHC-accepted dental chews list or our best dental chews page.
Frequently asked questions
How often should dog dental chews be given?
Once a day is the label direction for the four lines we checked, and the VOHC Seal is awarded for products used as directed on the package. Count the chew inside WSAVA’s 10% treat limit. Ask your vet if your dog has a medical condition or special diet.
Is it okay to give my dog a dental chew every day?
For a healthy adult dog, a chew sized to the dog’s weight and given while you watch is the normal use, and daily is how the labels read. Watch the calories, and ask your vet about dogs with a health condition, a prescription diet or a weight problem.
How many dental chews can a dog have a day?
One, according to the labels of the four lines we checked. A second chew adds its calories on top, and in our calculation one chew of the label size went over the WSAVA daily treat allowance in 11 of 15 cases for dogs of 18 to 77 lb.
Should I give a dental chew in the morning or at night?
We found no vet source that names a best time. VOHC advises giving chews when you can watch your dog chew, so pick a time when you are home to watch.
Do I need to cut my dog's meals when I give a daily chew?
The Greenies label says to cut the main meal by the chew’s calories, and Milk-Bone says to reduce food by about 10% a day while feeding. For other chews, check the package or ask your vet.
